Houston-area homes are built for heat, not cold. Many Cypress homes run supply lines through the attic, along exterior walls and through the garage, with light insulation. Winter Storm Uri in February 2021 kept temperatures below freezing for days, and pipes split in homes across Harris County. A shorter hard freeze in December 2022 caused another wave.
Why the damage shows up late
Frozen water expands and splits the pipe, but the ice plugs the crack. Nothing leaks until the thaw, when water flows again at full pressure. If nobody is home, or if the break is in the attic, it can run for hours before anyone notices a sagging ceiling.
- Attic lines over bedrooms and hallways.
- Lines in exterior walls on the north side of the house.
- Hose bibs and lines in unheated garages.
- Pipes feeding upstairs bathrooms over the garage.
When the whole area freezes at once
A hard freeze splits pipes in thousands of homes at the same time, and plumbers and restoration crews get very busy. Shutting the main quickly, draining lines and photographing damage limits the loss while you wait. The restoration contractor who responds focuses on removing soaked insulation and failed drywall, then drying.
Before the next freeze, follow the National Weather Service Houston/Galveston forecasts and the pipe tips from Ready.gov winter weather: insulate attic and exterior lines, open cabinet doors under sinks and let faucets drip. For how the break itself is handled, see burst pipe cleanup.
